This open house is for individuals with autism, special needs or disabilities and their families. Activities have been
modified for those with special needs:
•Meet Ankeny first responders in a fun, safe and sensory friendly way.
•Families can explore a fire engine, police car and an ambulance and meet personnel on their terms, making future encounters less frightening.
•Escape from the Fire Safety trailer
•Tour the Fire Department
•Spray water from a fire hose
•Explore firefighters’ protective gear
•Make an emergency plan for your family
•Fire extinguisher and hands only CPR training available for family members
•Storytime
•Quiet and sensory friendly areas
•Meet Ankeny Police officers
•Learn about Project LOST with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office
•Other fire safety and educational activities

Join us for an evening of birdhouse painting, poetry, and crafts. Young children should be accompanied by an adult. Everything will be bilingual! One birdhouse per family. Groups of five or more please reach out directly to emroberts@dmpl.org to make arrangements.

When the sun goes down, the fun begins! Participants need to dress for the weather, and bring their own flashlight and a sack or basket for eggs. Gather as many eggs as you can find, then open them up to find out whether they hold candy or prizes from our amazing sponsors.
