“Trauma is a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope, often leaving lasting impacts on their physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. To support individuals affected by these experiences, trauma-informed care (TIC) shifts the traditional paradigm of care from asking “What is wrong with you?” to compassionately asking “What happened to you?” This approach treats every person with universal precautions, assuming they may have a history of trauma, and actively designs environments that prevent re-traumatization while promoting safety, trust, and empowerment. For the general public, learning about TIC is essential; it cultivates widespread empathy, reduces societal stigma surrounding mental health, and equips everyday citizens with the awareness needed to build safer, more supportive communities where healing can thrive.
