The Iowa Family Support Network would like to keep you posted on upcoming events in your area. Whether you are a parent or a provider, we will do our best to post any workshops, conferences, classes, and kid friendly events that are close to you!

  1. Need Food for Your Family? Live in or near Des Moines' East Side?

    EveryStep's Bright Kavanagh Center, 3000 Easton Blvd, Des Moines, IA 50317

    EveryStep is providing a three day supply of food, measured by family size through their mobile food pantry. All you have to do is show up at Bright Kavanagh Center between 2-4 PM on the 2nd or 4th Tuesday of EVERY month with a photo ID for every adult member of your household and some other form of ID for all the children in the household. At the Mobile Food Pantry, you will go through a short intake process. A volunteer will help you as you select the items you want.

  2. Healthy and Homemade Series

    This is a series focused on strategies for using your time. money and skills wisely to save money and prepare nutritious and safe foods. There will be three sessions: August 28th, September 4th, and September 11th from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. The cost is 30 dollars for all three sessions. You must register by August 26th.   3. Barnes and Noble Reading Program

    Barnes and Noble offers a summer reading program for children grades 1-6. Their reading program gives young readers the opportunity to earn a free book. All they have to do is:

    1.     Social Smarts - Self- regulation, executive functioning, dealing with anxiety, strategies to being successful in a group, and one on one, soft skills.

    Open House : Sept. 23rd: 6:00 - 7:00 (cost of program - $135.00)

    4: October 22

    5: October 29

    6: November 5

    You can register for any or all programs.

    Our Social Smarts Groups focus on improved social skills in a small group setting with groups formed by commonalities (not only by age). In addition to the groups of participants aged 5-13 we have traditionally had, we also have an expanded high school and college aged group. For these groups, participants should already have intermediate-to-strong verbal and academic skills. This will allow us to focus on social conversation and reciprocal language skills during the 50-minute sessions.

    Targets of our groups may vary based on the need of the individuals in the group, but may include:

    • Executive skill development

    • Building Social relationship through play and social interactions

    • Skills to be successful in school

    • Emotional regulation with use of the 5 point scale

    • Thinking and talking bubbles

    • Self advocating

    The cost for Social Smarts is $135.00 for the six-week sessions and $90.00 for the four-week sessions. Payment is to be made by check only, private insurance no longer accepted for Social Smarts. We ask that everyone provide payment in full no later than week 1 of group. To reduce overhead costs, we have discounted the program and eliminated the weekly payment option.

    To sign up, please email Jeremiah Gray at jgray@midstepservices.com/ . Enrollment will be on a first come, first serve basis and we must have at least three enrollees to form a group. After the Open House, we will verify we have enough participants for a group.

    Five Iowans to be Inducted into 2019 Iowa Latino Hall of Fame

    The Iowa Commission of Latino Affairs is pleased to announce the names of five remarkable Iowans who will be inducted into the 2019 Iowa Latino Hall of Fame, receive the Latinx Youth Leadership Award, and the Robert D. Ray Award for Equity and Justice.

    The Iowa Latino Hall of Fame was established to honor and recognize outstanding leaders in the Latino community.

    The 2019 Latino Hall of Fame honorees are:

    • Hector Avalos, PhD – Ames, IA (from Nogales, Sonora, Mexico)Founder and inaugural director of the first US Latino/a Studies program at Iowa State University; internationally recognized and respected scholar in the area of biblical studies.

    • Carlos Portes (posthumous) – Marshalltown, IA (from Havana, Cuba)Recipient of Ellis Island Medal of Honor Award for his contributions in this country; served as Special Ambassador for Latin American Affairs; numerous other achievements.

    • Lando X. Valadez (posthumous) – Des Moines, IA (Mexican heritage)Latino migrant worker who became a community leader, political activist, advocate for Latinos, court interpreter, historian, mentor; founder of a number of Latino and Hispanic based organizations; World War II hero; recipient of the Purple Heart and Silver Star Medal.

    The Latinx Youth Leadership Award recipient is:

    • Lilián Sánchez – Des Moines, IA (from Mexico)First generation college student; first Latina Vice President of the University of Iowa Student Government; advocate of diversity issues; fellow at Amnesty International.

    The Robert D. Ray Award for Equity and Justice recipient is:

    • Jan Mitchell – Des Moines, IA Teacher who paved a path for lifelong success in her students; founder of Al Exito, a program whose mission is empower Latinos for success through education, leadership, and community engagement.

    Event Information

    The Iowa Latino Hall of Fame is held around National Latino and Hispanic Heritage Month, from September 15 to October 15, which celebrates and honors the contributions made by Latinos and Hispanics in the United States.

    What: Iowa Latino Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

    When: Saturday, October 19, 2019 at 6:00 pm

    Where: Des Moines Art Center, 4700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50312

    The venue for the 2019 Iowa Latino Hall of Fame is a change in location from previous years.

    A reception will immediately follow the ceremony, sponsored by the Friends of the Iowa Commission and Office of Latino Affairs. The ceremony and reception are free and open to the public. No need to register.
